Google may be leaving China
Thu, 01/14/2010 - 03:42
Hi all, has it made the news in China that Google may be pulling out? Unknown Chinese hackers broke into the Gmail accounts of dissidents to try to find out their real identities. Google's bosses are hopping mad after they went out of their way to accomodate the Chinese government's censorship requirements. They're talking about just turning off the 'voluntary' censorship from the google.com.cn which would almost certainly result in the government blocking the site.

Google isn't going anywhere
I don't Google is going anywhere. Instead of whining and crying so much, maybe it should be trying to figure out why it couldn't prevent the attacks in the first place.
Google has way too much invested in China to pull out. And China's internet growth is way too significant to ignore.
My question is...how many Chinese people actually use Google.cn?

Google and China
I can't believe that Google would pull out of China because it got hacked unless the company itself was up to its eyeballs in surveillance and feared exposure. Even then, Google would find itself in a position to be blackmailed.
Yahoo (I think it was the one) was responsible for revealing the names of journalists to the Chinese government. Those guys went to jail.
In the U.S. I can google my street address and see photos of the front of my house as well as satellite photos of the top of my roof and my entire city. Worse, everything that I have ever Googled is kept on record. What is disturbing is not that anyone can see my activities, it's the fact that it is so easy to come to wrong conclusions by cherry picking certain data and ignoring the rest.
A few weeks ago there was an article in which one of the founders even said (in effect) "Don't do anything that you don't want the world to know." He got his comeuppance when he learned that he could find out a lot of information about himself on Google that he thought that only his lawyer knew.
We all grew up hearing that "knowledge is power." I don't think that anyone envisioned how that old saw would turn out.
That's why I don't use my own name online, and anyone trying to verify my name is given completely false information. My publications are pseudonymous.
I have never (to my knowledge) ever used Google.cn.

if google pulls out, it will
if google pulls out, it will be a great loss to itself because it will lose the entire fast-growing China market. And this is not a sensible decision for a business. And if google retreat, baidu, yahoo, and bing will smile. But as far as i know, its quit won't have too much effects on regular Chinese web users. It's a world of diversity now, people have mang choices. So people won't worry because they have other search engines to use. so to the end, google will turn out to be the loser. It's just my thoughts.

Google will be the loser
I agree with the comment above. It would be incredibly foolish for Google to pull out considering the growth of the internet in China. If it pulls out, something else will definitely fill the void. I just heard today that CCTV has come out with its own search engine recently and other developers are working on 'clones' of Google.
In the end, I still believe that cooler heads will prevail and that Google will stay in China.,
