Car Mechanics in China

Written by Robert Vance on March 27, 2008 – 4:21 am

In 2005, China heralded its first ever drive-thru McDonalds which opened in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. The highly publicized grand opening was representative of a much larger event taking place in China. And it still continues today. The People’s Republic of China has experienced a recent car boom which is the largest ever in history. People who ten years ago would never have dreamed of owning a motor vehicle can now make the big purchase thanks to a more open and free economy in China.

As I was walking down the street today in a busy Chinese metropolitan area, I passed a series of car mechanic shops. As I watched the dozens of mechanics busy at work, I wondered about something. In America, many car mechanics become experts at what they do based on working on their own cars. For some, a hobby that started in youth turns into a job and I am continually impressed by the incredible knowledge that car mechanics in America possess. But what about China car mechanics? The price of a car in China is still far from reach for the average worker. How do Chinese car mechanics develop their skills? Is there a special school that they attend to pick up this knowledge? I wonder what the quality is of car work is like in China?

If anyone has any experience and can answer this question, please leave a comment! I’d love to hear from you.
