Positive All the Time: China’s CCTV

Written by Robert Vance on May 28, 2008 – 7:06 am

I have been trying to catch a few minutes of CCTV’s earthquake coverage every evening as I eat dinner. While I am still impressed with the new level of information flowing from these broadcasts, I cannot help but feel that I am watching one big advertisement for the CCP. There are plenty of sad stories and ongoing problems that are covered on CCTV but there is always a common solution. That’s right. Your house might have fallen down and you might have lost all of your earthly possessions but your ‘friendly neighborhood’ government will be there to save the day. It’s no wonder that the CCP is warning Chinese people of the consequences of speaking out against the government to the foreign media. The aftermath of this earthquake is a perfect opportunity for the government to reassert its role as ‘God’ in the lives of its people. But with millions of people displaced and the threat of massive floods in the region, will the government be able to live up to its promises?  On television the CCP can achieve anything, but how about in reality? For the sake of the people who are suffering I do hope that the government can meet all of their needs but in my heart I know that this is just wishful thinking
