No Plastic Bag for my Watermelon in China

Written by Robert Vance on June 3, 2008 – 5:01 am

I thought I could at least buy a bag for the large watermelon that I purchased last night at a local supermarket. No sir. Not only was the store not giving away bags for free anymore, they just plain weren’t offering them. So, I walked home with a big watermelon and about a half dozen small items wedged between my chest and the watermelon. Oh yeah. It was pouring cats and dogs last night too. Needless to say, I was a little annoyed when I arrived back to my apartment. It’s not that I don’t care about the environment. And yes, I should have brought my own bags with me. Well, I don’t actually have my own bags. I guess I’ll have to buy some now. It’s just that I really needed a bag for that watermelon; in the pouring rain it was hard to carry.

How long is China going to go ‘without’ plastic bags? My Chinese friends tell me that this ‘ban’ is not going away anytime soon. What do you think about ‘no plastic bags?’ Leave me a comment.

I understand how you feel. Although some supermarkets still provide plastic bags for a fee which I can’t accept. If they really care about the environment, then there shouldn’t be any plastic bags for sale, it’s unfair for the consumers. The supermarkets are just profiting from this ban. They should sell/provide paper bags.
