Ping pong and Ambulances Dominate the Weekly China Roundup

The Weekly China Roundup from Sino News on TeachAbroadChina.com

  •  Hu’s got game: If Chinese President Hu JinTao’s prowess on the ping pong table in Tokyo this week is a foreshadow of things to come in August, countries of the world should beware! Japan Today reports that on Thursday, Mr. Hu “beat Japanese teen player Fukuhara in five of the eight rounds of rally they had.” There are also reports that the Chinese leader also beat  a former Chinese  Olympic Champion.
  • Joining a Chinese library ‘club’: My students tell me that many ’public’ libraries in China are not free to the general public. You must pay for a membership and present your library card everytime you enter the library. My students tell me that fees can range from 100 RMB a year to 60 RMB a month. Yikes!
  • Chinese Ambulances that arrive too late: Next time you need an ambulance in China, expect to be waiting for a long time. The flashing blue lights and high pitched wail mean nothing to most Chinese drivers; cars and motorcycles simply do not yield the way for emergency vehicles in China. The same goes for other emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and police cars.
