Chinese TV — Depressing All the Time
Written by Robert Vance on March 25, 2008 – 9:08 amI turned my TV off yesterday in silent protest when for the second time in three hours, I watched a woman “accidentally” falling down a set of stairs after an argument with her lover. Don’t get me wrong. I like watching drama and I enjoy a good story but I don’t handle well the themes of family strife and lucid love affairs that are recycled every day in Chinese television. It seems that on one out of every three TV channels I surf, there is a bawling woman or yelling match taking place. Even with my low proficiency in Chinese, the stories and pictures that are on Chinese television are depressing and after a while become annoying. Why can’t I see some comedy every once in a while? Why does every story have to be so serious and melodramatic? The life in China is hard enough as it is for the average person. China could use a dose of some good old fashioned laughter now and then. What would Friends look like in China? A Chinese Jennifer Aniston? Well, maybe not but at least some comedy would put a smile on some faces that haven’t smiled in a long time.
