Just put up an article on my website about the whole China visa situation too.
http://blog.esldaily.org/2008/07/02/china-tightens-the-restrictions-on-foreign-teachers.aspx
I am looking for a teacher who may be able to give me a story or two about the whole situation. Perhaps someone knows a person at Chinese immigration that could give further information? You can contact me either through leaving a comment on the above link or you can email me at jim at esldaily.org

Shoes! Western sizes just aren't available in China, even in big cities. You can find a decent sized shirt or pair of jeans without too much trouble, but hunting for a pair of size 10 work shoes is just setting yourself up for failure.

Speaking from the experience of living with the same Chinese girl for 4 years plus, I think we produce and reproduce fantasy, unrealistic and unreasonable expectations in Chinese women and their fellow Chinese by characterising them as the 'poor victims' of 'predatory Western men'. Any flexibility I may have had towards the idea of commitment was long outweighed by her other-wordly demands. Chinese people ought to chill out on all this, and we should stop reproducing the myth of their 'innocence'. They are as crafty and manipulative as you or I, perhaps more so. Chinese people ought to 'face' up to their responsibilities as individuals, responsbilities that they know they have really, but that they still try to cover up. Mark my words: anyone who has actually been with a Chinese girl for a long-time, even if they were as genuinely interested as one can be when first meeting at the beginning, knows that the victim is really the foreigner (male). Don't even go there (here). And the rest of you should stop talking uncritical rubbish. Look out for yourself, everyone else is, especially the Chinese. And if the state, or parents, interfere with interpersonal relations then they are wrong; they too should mind their own business, which as I have said they are very good at when they want to be. (Male) teachers in China looking for kicks would be better off using massage parlours (for intimate massages, not sex) than getting involved in a relationship (just be careful about hygiene etc). It is expected of you, and don't let anybody tell you any different; they don't know China. If you try to be 'pure' out here, and find 'purity' everywhere you look and go, you're in a dreamland; take care you are not rudely awakened. When you are rudely awakened you'll go home to the US, UK, Europe or wherever and you'll have a whole new perspective on 'purity' there too. But somewhere in this cynicism is liberation, if only one can stand the pain of the truth.

Forget it Sara, you'll never get any straight answers from the chinese.

You have to remember they've been so brain-washed for so many decades, they don't know the truth, even when it's staring at them.

They don't like to 'lose face' - and they would rather lie through their teeth, than tell the truth.

Yugung: You asked me this: Since Tibet is a part of China how can China invaded itself in 1951?
My answer is: Why did China FORCE Tibet to sign the 17 point agreement then? What was the purpose?

You think you know ALL the answers, let's hear what you have to say about this.

Yugung: No, this isn't a fairy-tale, the Manchu ruled China during the Qing Dynasty, therefore when the Qing Dynasty ended in 1912, Tibet was still an independent country, so how on earth can the chinese say that Tibet has ALWAYS been part of China? You don't know your own history!!

And how disgraceful of you to say that those Tibetans desperately trying to leave Tibet is plain nonsense. In the next sentence, you seem quite aware it is happening, but you think it's ok. It's typical of the chinese to not want to answer a direct question. If you ask them a direct question, they come back with "well what about the streets of LA, or what about Iraq..." You don't want to answer any direct questions about China because (a) you can't really excuse your government's behaviour (and your own) and (b) you couldn't care less about the Tibetan people.

You are a disgrace Yugung. and, for the record, Tibetans are NOT smugglers and whatever else bad you want to call them, they are being seriously oppressed by the chinese, and everyone, apart from the chinese, understand completely why they would want to leave Tibet.

You think it's ok to shoot them down like animals. Shame on you. You're evil.

It is amazing how uninformed you people are about crime statistics. The FACT is that Blacks are CONVICTED of crimes at a greater rate than any other ethic group in the US. That FACT accounts for the reason why Blacks are over-represented in the prison poplulation, which the crime stats being thrown about represent. So these are not actual crime stats, they are CONVICTION stats...

If you consider drug crimes for example...A person caught with Crack will generally be given a harsher sentence than a person caught with powdered cocaine. This may seem irrelevant, but when you consider that crack is derived from cocaine..i.e. SAME DAMN DRUG. Then why are users or people dealing different kinds of the same drug treated differently? I dont know the answer to that but I do know that for the most part, crack is used by poor people..blacks in the US are also over-represented in this group, while cocaine is used by the wealthy, white people are also over-represented in this group. What happens as a result of this is that blacks and other people of color are given harsh sentences (convicted) for possessing 1/10th of the same drug (crack) that a wealthy person will be able to get a great attorney and walk away with community service and a warning not to do it again.

The stats you people mention assumes that the justice system in the US is fair and unbiased so if someone is convicted of a crime they are guilty of the crime. We only need to scratch the surface and stop being lazy and do a little research to find out how many people are being released on a daily basis because a decent attorney working pro-bono looked at the evidence that was used to convict innocent people and is astounded by the fact that this person was convicted in the first place.

Also with certain attitudes toward black people are all over this country, including the police force, prosecuters, teachers , lawyers, doctors, judges, etc....Of particular concern is people in the police force who for the most part only need a high school diploma to join. Now let's think for a moment of how much you knew about the world, other cultures, other races when you left high school. I knew little. Yet these people are given weapons and a boatload of power and sent on the street to police us.

Seriously people...do a bit of research before posting falsehoods here. If white people in the US were the ones who were marginalized in this country the crime stats being thrown about here would look much different and all of you would be asking "what is hell is wrong with white people and why do they commit so much crime?".

And for the person who is/was a teacher in China: Do some research before you "inform" people who know little about Black people about Black people. When your students brought up black people commiting so much crime in America, you should've used it as an opportunity to explore this misinformation by doing some research with them to see if this was true. ALL of you would've learned from it.

sara: The Manchu and the Tibetans were on friendly terms, but the Manchu did not rule Tibet, or even try to.
yugung: Is this fairy tale that u read?
The Qing court spend 1/2 of its budget on the war against the Nepalese invasion in 1790 and in 1792 created a mini-constitution for Tibet which lay down the rules for selection of Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama. Qing ruledTibet very seriously.
