ESL Conversation Topics — Bosses and Employees

Written by Robert Vance on May 30, 2008 – 12:56 am

Level: Intermediate to Advanced

I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun teaching an ESL social talk then when I did this activity about bosses and employees. There was controversy and humor and all of my students left class laughing.

Warmup: Ask your students if they have recently been looking for a job. Make sure they understand the terms interview and CV(resume). Ask your students if any of them have been looking for a job recently. Ask them about their experiences.

Activity: Divide the class up equally into bosses and employees. Give the bosses the sheet with the numbers on it and give the employees the sheet with the resume information. Tell the bosses to come up with some questions for the prospective employees and tell the prospective employees to develop a short resume that they can show to the bosses.

Rotate the prospective employees so that each boss has a chance to meet with each employee. Give about five minutes for each interview. Instruct the bosses to write notes about each employee. After everyone has been interviewed, hand out slips of paper to each boss and ask them to vote on who they want to hire. Tally up the votes and announce the winner.

Prospective Employees: You are interviewing for a manager position at a local grocery store chain.
Create a short resume of your experience:

Name:

Why you want to have this job?

What is your educational background?:

What experience do you have with being a leader? Give some examples.

Why do you think that you are qualified to be a manager at the store?

What is your previous work experience? List in order:

FOR THE BOSSES: You are hiring someone for a manager position at your grocery store chain.

Come up with a list of questions that you will ask your prospective employee
