ESL Conversation Topic — Chinese Culture vs. Your Culture
Posted in ESL Conversation Topics on 04/12/2008 05:07 am by Robert Vance
Level: Beginner to Advanced
This is a good way for you to share about your culture and learn about Chinese culture. This topic also usually brings a lot of response from the students.
Warmup: Ask your students to pretend that they are getting on an airplane today to visit your country. Ask them to close their eyes for a moment and imagine how your country would be different from theirs.
Questions to discuss:
How are the following different between our countries?
- Food
- Money (show them some of your country’s money if you have some)
- Transportation
- Education
- Time (talk about time zones and let them know about the time difference between China and your country)
- Families
- Religion (this is OK to talk about within a cultural context)
- Government
Make sure that during this discussion you do not in any way put down the Chinese culture. Remind your students that even though the cultures are different, we are all ‘human beings’ which is why we can be friends.
