ESL Conversation Topic — Consumer Rights

Written by Robert Vance on April 21, 2008 – 8:37 am

Level: Advanced

This topic of consumer rights should provide you a chance to show some differences between your culture and Chinese culture since consumer rights in China only generally exist at the big chain stores.

Warmup: Tell about a time that you had to return something in your home country as well as in China. Point out the differences between both experiences and ask a few students to talk about a time when they had to return something. What kind of experience did they have?

Question to Ask:

  • What stores in China offer consumer rights?
  • How do you know if a store offers consumer rights? Is it on the receipt? Is it an oral agreement?
  • If you have a problem with an item can you return it or are you only offered an exchange?
  • Do Chinese companies offer their own guarantee (warranty) above and beyond the retail outlet?
  • How many days do you have to return or exchange an item in China?
  • Do consumer rights in China need to improve? If you were a lawmaker how would improve these rights?
  •  If you owned a company, what kind of rights would you want to offer your consumers?
  • What are some of the better Chinese products? What are the worst?
