ESL Conversation Topic — Mothers in China
Written by Robert Vance on May 15, 2008 – 1:25 amLevel: Intermediate to Advanced
Even if you are not teaching in China, you should be able to modify this ESL Conversation on mothers slightly to make it work for your particular country.
Warmup: Print off a copy of the article Why Mother’s Day is Extra Special in China and ask your student to take turns reading paragraphs. It is not essential that they understand every word or sentence but they should have a general idea of what the author of the article is writing.
Discuss:
- Has your mother ever told you that she loves you?
- Have you ever told your mother that you love her?
- How is love expressed in China? Do you agree with the author that Chinese mothers express their love more through actions than words?
- The article talks about a time in China when raising a child was difficult. How about in your life? Did your family ever have hard times like those described in the article?
- The article mentions some sacrifices that Chinese mothers have had to make for their children. How about in your family? What sacrifices have your mothers (and parents in general) had to make for you?
- How have mothers changed in China? Does this article reflect the current situation in China?
- For the girls in the class…when you are mothers someday (or if you are now), will you speak ‘loving words’ to your children or use only actions to show your love?
- Does a child need to be told that he or she is loved on a regular basis or is it good enough for the child to see love through actions?
- What does the phrase in the article ‘labor of love’ mean?
