ESL Conversation Topic — Role Playing

Level: Beginner to Advanced

ESL Role Playing is a fun way to lighten up the mood and ’shake things up’ a bit. Of course, the role of your ESL role playing class will largely depend upon the participation of your students. Encourage them to ‘be actors’ and not worry what others think about them.

Warmup: Divide the class into groups and give each group a role to play. If you have a lot of time, you can give some of the groups the same roles. Tell the groups that they will have to decide within each group who plays what roles. You can pass out the following role sheet.

ROLE PLAYING

1. A. You are going to ask your partner to marry you.
B. You partner is going to ask you to marry him or her.

2. A. You have just finished a meal. When you get the bill, you notice three items on it that you did
pay for
B. You are the manager of the restaurant. A customer comes to you complaining that his bill is to
high.
3. A. You are seeing your mother after 20 years of being out of the country.
B. You are seeing your son or daughter after he or she has been away for 20 years

4. A. You are angry because your husband just spent US $1000.00 on a new TV without asking you.
B. Your wife is angry at you because you just spent US $1000.00 on a new TV with you asking her

5. A. You are walking down the street when a thief comes up behind you and steals your cell phone.
B. You are a thief and you come up behind someone and steal their cell phone.

6. A. You are going to break up with your girlfriend/boyfriend.
B. Your girlfriend/boyfriend is going to break up with you.

7. A. You are teaching a class and one of your students is on a cell phone in class.
B. You are on a cell phone in class while the teacher is teaching.

8. A. You are standing in line at a KFC. Someone jumps in front of you in the line
B. You jump in front of someone in a line at KFC
