ESL Conversation Topics — Hypothetical Situations

Level: Beginner to Advanced

Everyone likes hypotheticals, right? I wrote some fun hypotheticals for your ESL Chinese students but of course you should change them as you see fit.

Warmup: Teach your students the word ‘hypothetical’ and then divide them up into groups. Give each group (or each person) a copy of the ESL hypothetical questions below and ask them to discuss the questions for twenty minutes. At the end of twenty minutes, go through the questions with your students and have each group give you at least once answer.

What would you do if…

1. you won a million dollars from the lottery and you had to spend it in 10 days?

2. you found out you would die in eight hours?

3. you had the chance to travel around the world(all expenses paid) for seven days but would lose your job in the meantime?

4. you found a 3000 RMB cell phone on the street that would still power up?

5. you tripped on your shoelace in the middle of Carrefour and fell flat on your face in front of many people?

What would you say if…

1. you could spend 20 minutes U.S. President George W. Bush?

2. you could speak with the Dalai Lama for 10 minutes? (be careful with this one and use it as you see fit)?

3. one of your friends told you he was gay?

4. a dog on the street started talking to you in English one day?

5. a famous movie star (worth millions of dollars) knocked on your apartment door and asked you to marry him?

Have fun with this one! I used it recently
