Written by Robert Vance on September 2, 2008 – 4:59 pm

Level: ADULTS/TEENAGERS Intermediate to Advanced

The ESL Conversation Topic of divorce is sad but apart of life in many cultures including China’s. Discuss this in a sensitive manner knowing that there may be people who have been divorced in your class.

Warmup: Find an article about divorce on the internet. You can use this one here if you would like. Pass out a copy to your students.

Discussion:

  1. What are some reasons for why people divorce? Is it usually for infidelity?
  2. Who does divorce hurt the most do you think?
  3. Is it easy for someone who has been divorced to remarry in China? How would you feel about marrying a divorced person?
  4. For you, what is a good reason to divorce? What is a bad reason?
  5. What are the laws like in China concerning divorce? Do Chinese husbands/wives split everything 50/50 like other countries?
  6. What do you think is the best way to avoid divorce? It is possible to have a divorce free marriage?
  7. If your spouse cheated on you would you divorce him/her immediately or allow a second chance?
  8. Some couples have been married for 75 years. What do you think the secret of their success is?
