ESL Conversation Topic — Divorce

The ESL Conversation Topic of divorce is sad but apart of life in many cultures including China’s. Discuss this in a sensitive manner knowing that there may be people who have been divorced in your class.
Warmup: Find an article about divorce on the internet. You can use this one here if you would like. Pass out a copy to your students.
Discussion:
- What are some reasons for why people divorce? Is it usually for infidelity?
- Who does divorce hurt the most do you think?
- Is it easy for someone who has been divorced to remarry in China? How would you feel about marrying a divorced person?
- For you, what is a good reason to divorce? What is a bad reason?
- What are the laws like in China concerning divorce? Do Chinese husbands/wives split everything 50/50 like other countries?
- What do you think is the best way to avoid divorce? It is possible to have a divorce free marriage?
- If your spouse cheated on you would you divorce him/her immediately or allow a second chance?
- Some couples have been married for 75 years. What do you think the secret of their success is?
