ESL Conversation Class — Presidential Election

Level: Intermediate - Advanced

If you have the right students, holding a Presidential Election in ESL Conversation Class can be a great activity! Plus, it is a good learning experience since most of your Chinese students have probably never voted before.

Warmup: Explain to your students that they will be participating in a presidential election. Choose three people to run as presidential candidates and explain to them that they will need to prepare a short speech. Explain to the rest of the class that they will be preparing some questions for the candidates. At the end of the class, they will be voting for president. Depending on how much time you have, you can talk about politics the nature of politics in your country a little bit.

Activity:

Give each student (including the candidates) a copy of the following activity sheet.

• Poverty in China
• Education System
• China & Japanese Relations
• Food Prices
• Crime in China
• Relations with the United States
• Corruption
• Tibet
• The environment

FOR THE CANDIDATES:

Prepare your opening speeches: Only 2 minutes per speech allowed! Talk about why YOU will be the best President.

FOR THE VOTERS:

Prepare some questions relating to the topics above. Be ready to ask the candidates.

Voting Ballot: Who do you vote for? You can only vote for ONE Candidate.
