Eww…I don’t eat that…
Written by Robert Vance on March 12, 2008 – 4:49 amI’m really getting tired of foreigners who think that eating any food off the street is beneath them. Too many times I hear a foreigner telling me, “I don’t eat there. That food is dirty.” What? How do you know that? And are you sure that the food that you are ordering in the restaurant is so sparkling clean?
Look, there is no question that some foods on the street should be avoided. But come on…one of my favorite places to eat fried noodles is on the street. For every customer, they put new plastic on the plates or bowls so your food is never actually touching anything that has been used. The food is delicious and economical. Yet, some of my foreigner friends have condemned me for eating there.
So is it unwise to eat off the street now and then? I realize that it might look funny to some to see a foreigner sitting with the “common folk” but I actually enjoy it. I don’t care how much money I make teaching English; I’m always going to look for the best deal.
