- The IOC (International Olympic Committee) in hot water — It has not been a good week for Kevan Gosper and the International Olympic Committee. It appears that the IOC may have known about Beijing’s plan to censor the internet from the start and Olympic Press Chief Kevan Gosper claimed earlier this week that he was the “fall” man. He has now retracted that statement and Hu JinTao himself promised that Beijing would follow through on its earlier promise. But has it? From all accounts it appears that certain sites in Beijing are still blocked…
- The heat goes up and the shirts come off — Apparently the rule “No shirt, no shoes, no service” does not apply to many supermarkets in China. This week, I observed a number of men shopping without their shirts on. I do not blame them necessarily; it has been a very hot week for much of China but it is still a startling sight.

- Driver’s Ed in China is a Scary Thing — A friend of mine who is learning how to drive shares with me this week that many new drivers in China practice their driving skills without the assistance of their driving instructor. “The instructor doesn’t go with us,” my friend explained. “We are on our own.” I am guessing that sitting in a car with a student driver in China would be just too dangerous. After all, no one slows down for ambulances around here. Why would they take it easy around student drivers?
