ESL Discussion Topic — Health

Written by Robert Vance on March 26, 2008 – 10:08 am

Level: Intermediate and above.

Health is a great social topic because it involves all of your students and should be something that everyone is passionate about.

Warmup: Talk about a personal experience relating to health. Maybe you got sick and had to spend the night in the hospital? Maybe you got in a car accident? Ask one or two of your students to relate health experiences.

During the discussion you can talk about the following aspects of health:

  • Is health care available to everyone in China?
  • How much does health care cost in China?
  • What is the quality of healthcare in China like?
  • How much are doctors in China paid compared to other countries?
  • What prescriptions are given in China for common illnesses such as stomachaches and colds?
  • What is the average life expectancy in China? How does it compare to other countries?
  • Are people in China healthier than people in other countries? If so, why?
  • Talk about difference in diets and how that has an influence on health

Hopefully, you can encourage your students to share their own experiences and express their opinion about healthcare around the world.
