Michael Phelp’s Eighth Olympic Gold is Cheered by Chinese Fans

Written by Robert Vance on August 17, 2008 – 1:44 pm

My Chinese students are in love with Michael Phelps; or so it would appear. They talk about him constantly; they think that he is supernatural. They admire his strength and dedication to swimming. He is the one American athlete that everyone I know here in China has been cheering for ever since he began his quest to capture a record eight gold medals in Beijing. He has become the friendly face of Team USA and has attracted millions of fans here and around the world. Today, my Chinese friends and students are ecstatic about Phelp’s eighth gold. So am I.

Michael Phelps is what the Olympics are all about; striving for athletic excellence, smashing world records, and bring the international community closer together. Congratulations to Michael Phelps and Team USA!

    @Anonymous,

    Well, I do hear alot of racist remarks about black people and other ethnic groups. I don’t think you would find too many Chinese people who are racist against whites. For the most part, they admire our culture…

    Everybody is so amazed about Michael Phelps getting 8 golds and Usain Bolt breaking three world records in the track and field event. But have you read the most inspiring story of all which reflects the true meaning of Olympics. Beijing Olympic is not about how many medals an athlete have attained but rather sacrifices made just to be able to compete in that very competitive type of gathering in all sports.

    If you haven’t read this story about these two Somalian athlete, then this link will help you, http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/track_field/news;_ylt=AqrVmWvwv9B.gKCCVhVYKiGde5p4?slug=cr-somalirunners082408&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

    To these two athletes, you are inspiration to all and you have given us the true meaning of OLYMPICS. Platinum medal should be awarded to both of you.
