No Hands…
Written by Robert Vance on March 13, 2008 – 5:32 amR-E-S-T-A-U-R-A-U-N-T…is that how you spell it? No, but that’s how I wrote it up on the whiteboard this afternoon. Come on, give me a break. I was tired. I wasn’t used to working the morning shift. I definitely wasn’t on the top of my game today. Besides that, I was hearing some pretty scary stuff from my students today. I guess I’m living in a pretty crime infested town. Two different students told me today that thieves routinely cut people’s hands off around here if they refused to hand over their shopping bags or purse. Okay. On my way out today, I ran into a foreigner who informed me that an American had been murdered not too far from where I live. Wonderful. I’ve only been here a week and I’m already nervous about stepping out my door after the sun goes down. Is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be around here? Probably not. Or at least I hope not. It’s just a little unsettling to hear these “stories” since I have always thought of China as one of the safest countries I have ever lived in.
I’ll just do what I’ve always done. That includes carrying little money and staying inside after midnight. A little common sense goes a long way!
