The 2008 Olympic Games and Michael Phelps Dominate the Weekly China Roundup

- China steals the Olympic show this week– As of 9:00 on Saturday morning Beijing time, the United States leads the medal count with 46 but China has a large lead in the gold metal category with 26; the U.S. has 14. “Of course the number of gold medals are more important than the actual medal count,” my Chinese friends and students tell me this week. However, most here realize that next week will most likely be a different story for China especially since track and field is not its strong point…
- Sweet 16? Maybe not — It’s a story that’s been out for a few weeks now but has received new life in the wake of China’s success in women’s gymnastics this week. Three Chinese gymnasts who look way too young to be sixteen may very well be under the legal age limit. Does it really matter though? Most of the Chinese people who I talk to say that breaking this rule doesn’t harm anyone so the world should stop complaining. Read more here…
- Michael Phelps is a beast — Even my Chinese students can’t help but admire American swimming champion Michael Phelps who as of Saturday morning Beijing time, has won 6 gold medals. He goes for another gold this morning and if he can pull off a victory in tomorrow’s 100m medley relay, he will beat Mark Spitz’s 36-year-old record of 8 golds in one game. “JIA YOU Phelps!”
