Stampedes and Communism Dominate the Weekly China Roundup

Written by Robert Vance on July 26, 2008 – 10:00 pm

The Weekly China Roundup from TeachAbroadChina.com

  1. Is the Olympic Stampede in Beijing surprising? — Not really. The Associated Press reports  that in Beijing, 250,000 tickets that went on sale on Friday in Beijing caused a major stampede. According to the article from Yahoo News, people were knocked to the ground and metal barricades were bent in “the chaotic rush.” Some fights reportedly broke out as well. Hmmm. Have you ever tried to buy a train ticket in Guangzhou during Spring Festival? I have seen fights and small stampedes break out at bus and train stations throughout my travels in China. Seems to be a common occurrence here.
  2. Whatever happened to communism in China? — This week, I argue that China is no longer a communist country. Does that mean I am letting China off the hook? Certainly not. There are plenty of countries out there that are not communist but are still guilty of human rights atrocities. What do you think? Have China and communism parted ways? Read more here…
  3. Why I was in some pain after my recent appendectomy — Yes, as you may already know, I, Robert Vance, had a small operation done this week. Some Chinese doctors cut me open and removed my inflamed appendix. What I did not know until later is that according to my friends, it is against the law for doctors in China to administer drugs for the purpose of relieving pain after an operation. That mean’s no morphine which a nurse friend of mine here describes as “too addictive and harmful.” That probably explains some of the pain that I endured after this “small” operation. You can read more about my experience in a Chinese hospital here…
  4. 10 things to avoid doing on your travels in China — I have seen some crazy things on my travels in China and alot of them involve foreigners. Click here to read some humourous yet helpful traveling tips from Robert Vance and TeachAbroadChina.com…
