Saying Goodbye — ESL Conversation Topic

Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Saying goodbye is never easy but it makes for a great ESL conversation topic. Have fun with this one.

Warmup: Go to this website and print off a copy for each student. Tell students about a time when you had to say goodbye to a good friend or family member. Ask some of your students to share a similar experience.

Discussion:

  1. Why do you think it is so hard to say goodbye to a friend?
  2. What is the best way to say goodbye to someone? Party? Gifts? Just a simple hug?
  3. Is it harder to say goodbye to your best friend or a close relative?
  4. How many times do you think a person has to say goodbye in an average lifetime?
  5. Are there differences between the word “goodbye” in English and the word “goodbye” in your language? (For example, in Chinese, goodbye actually means see you again soon).

Getting the Students Involved:

Have the students act out saying goodbye to each other using the following scenarios

–  Girlfriend to Boyfriend

–  Wife to husband

– Best friends

– Business Associates

– Make up your own
