Michael Phelps Swims Into the Hearts of the Chinese People–Michael Phelps made history on Sunday when he and Team USA won the 4X100 Medley relay in Beijing and grabbed his eighth gold medal of the 2008 Olympic Games. It is no wonder that he dominates the Weekly China Roundup for a second time in a row. He has captivated the world and picked up millions of Chinese fans this week. Click here to read more…

Stinky Armpits in China Beware! – Our very own Jean Chesterton answers a viewer’s concern this week about whether or not deodorant is widely available in China. The answer is…well you should click here and read about it for yourself…

Chen Ruolin’s Splashless Gold Medal Winning Dive — Chen Ruolin and her Chinese counterpart Wang Xin were nearly perfect on Wednesday night in the women’s Olympic 10 meter dive. I cannot help but wonder what kind of training routine these girls have been subjected to but nonetheless, their performances were impressive. Read more here…

Traveling by Bus in China; a dangerous adventure — This week, I write about why it is probably better to avoid traveling by bus in China. Especiallyf if you value your limbs and your life. Read more here…

There was simply no splash. At least, that is how Chen Ruolin’s gold medal winning plunge just a few minutes ago in the Women’s Olympic 10 Meter Dive appeared to my untrained eye. I was cheering for Canada; I will admit it. I was hoping that Emilie Heymans could carry her superb performance through to the very end. Heymans did perform well on her last dive but it was not enough. Both Chen Ruolin and her Chinese counterpart Wang Xin, who took the bronze home for China tonight, were simply unbeatable. The quality of their form and motion seemed to be on a much higher level than anyone else in the competition. I cannot help but admire their skill.

I cheered for Chen as she hugged her coach; she is just 16 years old. I can only guess what pressure she was under to grab the gold for China but she delivered beautifully. I am happy for her and for the millions who were cheering for Team China tonight. These gold and bronze medals were well deserved.
