I have a small apartment. It’s only 65 square metres. It contains a small kitchen, a bathroom with a bathtub(something I’ll never use), a medium sized master bedroom and another bedroom about the size of a large walk in closet. And I’m paying about 2300 RMB plus a 130 RMB per month management fee. And on top of that, there’s the utilities to pay as well which will probably run about 150 RMB per month. Not a bad deal when you also consider that I am living in a very good area with a security guard right outside my door.

Of course, I could have taken a job that included an apartment but my salary would have suffered. I enjoy choosing where I am going to live and not having the lease of my apartment linked to my contract with the school. That way, if I ever need to leave the school for some reason, I don’t get kicked out of the apartment.

Overall, I’m pleased with my accomodation. It isn’t fancy but it’s a roof over my head and that’s all I can ask for right now. Maybe someday if I make it big teaching in China (whatever that means) I can get something a little bigger.
