Where to Look for China Teaching Jobs

Written by Robert Vance on May 1, 2008 – 1:22 am

I get many emails through this website from people who want me to help them find a job. Dear Robert, they write, can you give me a job teaching in China? I wish I had the power to give them a position but I am not a recruiter; I do not run a school. However, as a teacher myself, I do recognize that find a ’starting point’ in the job hunting process can be difficult and a little overwhelming. Here are some tips that have helped me during the long hours that I have spent looking for jobs:

–The best way to look for jobs online is to use the three major search engines: Google, Yahoo, and MSN. These search engines will lead you to a large number of ESL websites that list hundreds of job openings in China. The search engines may also lead you to school websites and recruiting agencies that can help you.

–Try using different keywords on the search engines to see a wider variety of schools. For example, if you already have a specific area of China in mind, you should try searching with that city or province as part of the query. The search engines can also help you target jobs based on salary and housing.

–Putting yourself out there for schools to contact is also another good way to find jobs in China. There are multiple websites on the internet (and you can find them using the search engines) that allow prospective teachers to upload their resumes for free. Schools and training centers will review resumes and contact teachers if they are interested. There are many forums where you can post on ‘job wanted’ forums. Make sure you leave information that will allow schools to contact you easily.

–People often ‘badmouth’ recruiters and for good reason. There are some shady operators out there. See this page for more information. However, there are  recruiters out there who can actually help you. They are paid by the school and they can act as a negotiator between you and the school administration. Always do some research however, before trusting a recruiting agency. Look them up on the internet and see what others are saying about them.

–If you are in the university, your school may be able to help you find some reputable schools to work with. These positions are probably the lowest paid teaching jobs but also the most secure.

The internet is a powerful job finder tool. I have found all of my jobs in China by surfing through dozens of sites and hundreds of listings. Take your time and do some research. You’ll be happy you did later on.

Those are just a few tips if you are stuck on where to start. For more information, be sure to visit our free guide for finding a job in China. You may even find a few job listings on our China Forum.
