The Price of Tea in China
Written by Robert Vance on April 2, 2008 – 8:45 amThere’s a Starbucks down the street from here but none of my students ever hang out there. It’s no wonder. The prices for a cup of coffee at the famous coffee chain are the same as in the United States. I think that the U.S. prices are already too high. Imagine having to shell out the same amount of money for a cup of coffee in Doubly outrageous!
I guess I should immerse myself more into the tea culture of China to avoid paying high prices at Starbucks. Recently, I was caught off guard by a conversation about tea in China between two fellow male foreign teachers. Their “tea lingo” went right over my head as they discussed in detail their appreciation for many kinds of tea in China. Me? I just know about green tea and black tea. And apparently, black tea isn’t even black. Fancy that.
So for now, I guess I’ll just be buying Nestle Instant Coffee from the local supermarket. I know that stuff tastes like water to you Starbuck’s coffee connoisseurs. Water it may be but at least I’ll be able to afford to buy food. For me, coffee is coffee. As long as it keeps me awake and energetic, I’ll be gulping it down.
