I’m thinking of going to China to teach.  Do you know if they are accepting some Filipino instructors?

How are Filipinos compared with other nations?

There are many Filipino teachers in China although at the moment, it is still difficult to get a visa. Take a look around on this website as well as on the internet and you can find jobs for non-native speakers of English. Good luck.

In my experience, Filipinos can generally NOT speak very good English..not well enough to teach at least. Why would an English school in China hire a Filipino when there are plenty of Westerners available?

@Kittyhawkdown

To be fair, there are plenty of Westerners who do not speak very 'good' English either. Actually, I have met Filipinos who are probably more than qualified to teach English but they are not given a chance. BTW, there are not so many Westerners available to teach right now in China. Schools are hard up for teachers.

It's just your experience, kitty. Maybe you just happened to met Filipinos who can hardly speak english and I hate the idea that you generalize it as a whole. I won't say all Filipinos, there are some who speaks english that is above-average than any western people. Though I might say English for western people is their mother tongue, NOT all can converse it in a proper way. Westerners only got an edge because they have this “accent” that attracts Chinese employers, but Filipinos can also have “neutral accent” which can be better decipher to children or learners whose mother tongue is not English.

Well this is just my take on what you said above. ^^

^ This is simply not true. Filipinos are bad because:

1. they make a lot of grammatical errors

2. They are not totally familiar with the culture - which is central to languiage. Think of all the idiomatic phrases we use.

3. Despite what you may think, they often have strong accents

4. They cannot explain grammatical rules as well as a well-educated native

Look, I don't like all the generalizing but as a blogger I often have to generalize so I am not going to condemn you for that this time. However, I must take issue with you on the 4th point.

Unless that “well-educated” native just happens to have a teaching degree in English, then what you write is highly doubtful. Anyone knows that someone who has to study English as a second language is going to understand the grammar better than a native speaker.

And since when do you or anyone else hire “well educated” native speakers anyway? Aren't they too expensive?

It's not highly doubtful at all. I don't have an English Teaching degree in English but I know the rules of grammar enough to teach them explicitly if I have to. Why? Because I learned them in school.

But also because I inherently know what sounds right and this is where many NNS fall down. They get lost in the idosyncracies of English grammar and the exact definitions of words. Anyone who has a good, error-less command of their native language and can demonstrate that in writing (i.e. a well educated person) should be able to deduce and clarify a rule from an example. Most NNS that I meet get mixed up when explaining tough grammar rules that natives know inherently, like when to use articles for example. I see this a lot. Maybe you just judge people by your own standards.

Peter Easton said,”…maybe you just judge people by your own standards.”

Aren't you the one making your own standards of what you think is an ideal ESL teacher?

I really believed that fish can be caught by their own mouth ^^,

Why this whole non-native-English-speakers topic is solely focused on Filipinos. You made your comment sound like you're racist to this people group.

Was it because you encountered a Filipino ESL teacher before who outwitted you?

I beg to disagree that you find NNS idiots in the English language. We call ourselves better than the NNS because we're native English speakers yet can't even spell out the right term for peculiarity of temperament

Besides, why do you have to compare NES from NNS when it comes to “explaining tough grammar rules that natives know inherently” when we all know that NNS acquired their English communication skills from school? Let's infer “skating” and “slang” words  in the English language as an example. Of course NES knows that better.

I dont think any NNS would be able to teach ESL in any part of  the world or even within their local place if they don't even know how to articulate. Same goes to NES. There are some NES also that I happen to meet that are hard to decipher.

I know a lot of Filipino teachers who are having hard time trying  to convey what they're meaning  in English but just so you know that what they teach is not the English subject. That, I can understand because they're majored in another field and not English.

Oh by the way, I didn't know that English is focused only to one culture when you said this, “they are not totally familiar with the culture - which is central to languiage. Think of all the idiomatic phrases we use”. That's an understatement. I believe English has many forms and it differs in every group of people groups.

I admit most NNS has this accents issue but that doesn't mean they can't explain grammatical rules just like any well-educated NES.

Since all these criticisings boiled down only to the Filipinos then I would just like to remind you all that even prestigious universities (e.g. Oxford, Harvard, Yale) hire Filipino teachers to teach English (and note, not just English) because they have seen their worth of how they can produce world-class professionals someday.

This is just what I think I have to say to the people who condescend Filipinos.

You are acting as if you got a good grammar yourself but the truth is you are committing a few mistakes at time.  Try to sort out all your post.

I am from the Philippines and I have friends working as English teachers in China. They do not have a degree in English but I can say that they have a good command of the English language.
