Hello

My name is Prakash Kamath (PK) and am from India based and working in Shanghai, China from the year 2004 and presently am a Sales & Marketing Manager for a Trading Company having Business of GIA Certified Diamonds. I stay in the Suburbs viz.Jiuting, Near Qibao, Songjiang District. I also have a few Students to whom I teach Oral English on an One on One basis Privately as per the suitable time of my Students.

I am not a Native English Speaker but I think my English is Good and also have a clear and clean Vocal Voice and also my pronounciation is upto the mark. I had been applying and trying to take up Part Time Teaching Jobs in Schools around my place of living but till date no replies. I am very much interested in Teaching on a Part Time Basis and most interestingly in Private Classes on an One on One Basis.

Can somebody explain me why is it so difficult to find a Job if we are not a Native English Speaker and what is the basic reason the Schools of China are looking out for Teachers based from USA, UK etc. Is this a kind of discrimination between countries or some hype about these countries.

Its a known fact that the Education level of India is considered as one of the best around the world as per the facts and figures of educated Indians placed on highly distinguished post around the world irrespective of the field. I am not trying to compare any countries at large but the facts and the question remains the same WHY?

So, I would like to know from you all educationists what are the basic reasons behind this hype and what can or should be done for the Non-Native English Speakers to get a Teaching Job in China. I am extremely sorry if I have touched any unknown strings which may cause some stress in the field of Education. I am Sorry Once Again.

With Warm Regards

Prakash Kamath (PK)

It's a tough world here for non native speakers. This website has quite a few articles about why it is so tough for non natives to find jobs. I suggest you take a look around. The main thing, is keep trying because there ARE schools that will hire non natives to teach. Good luck.

I must say that not all schools prefer non native speakers. Educational background plays a very important role though. Experience is also another factor.

This is a bit like asking, “Why is English the international language of business?”

For reasons beyond the scope of a single post reply, it just is.

Why is it harder for non-native speakers to find jobs as English teachers?

It just is. And it makes perfect sense. The job title says it all.

This is English as a second or foreign language, not ESL/EFL with a slight accent or almost as good as a native speaker.

Please stop trying to make it something other than what it is.

Why should native speakers apologize for having the most important skill for finding jobs and having successful TEFL careers?

The truth is, most people who pay money to learn English will choose a native speaker over a non-native speaker almost every time because it makes sense.

Most of the time we always get what we pay for, right?

The only person who really knows the answers to your questions is you, right? Why is it so hard for you to find a job?

It has nothing to do with the top prerequisite of the trade, amigo.

There are schools that take non native speakers but you do need to look around. At our school, three Indian teachers are employed to teach English, two of them are teaching business subjects in English.  It does seem that most parents expect their student to be taught English by white faced Americans/British.

hang in there and I would suggest that you actually talk with schools so that you can demonstrate your English abilities, not just look at  your resume.
