Are Chinese GPS Maps Helpful for Traveling in China?

Dear Jean,

What brands of GPS support Chinese maps? Do you know if all GPS devices can be used overseas given the maps are installed? I’m travelling to Shanghai at the end of the year.

Gary

Jean answers Gary’s question

Dear Gary,

You can certainly find a GPS with a Chinese map on it. Garmin, for example, offers a map of China with information about hotels and restaurants that can be used with compatible units. I am certain that other GPS brands can be equipped with Chinese maps as well.

However, I would caution you about relying too heavily on Chinese GPS maps when you are traveling. Not only have travelers reported inaccuracies on their GPS maps (due perhaps to Chinese regulations) but you need to remember that China is a fast developing country. As such, street names and locations of buildings or areas of the city may change without your map relecting that new information.

Our very own Robert Vance made a strong argument a few months ago for why travelers to China do not need to download Chinese maps on their GPS devices. He suggests that maps are simply not so useful in China. You can read that article entitled Buying a GPS — a Wise Investment by clicking here. You may find that a GPS without maps is very helpful, especially if you are planning on walking around Shanghai.

Thank you for your question and let us know how your trip goes!

Sincerly,

Jean Chesterton
